In Our Own Backyard...

A few weeks ago, we were pleasantly surprised to discover a Killdeer Bird's nest outside our classroom window. We've been watching her and journaling about her. We even saw the daddy too! They switched places so the eggs would stay warm and both parents could find food.
Here are the eggs! They are spotted and small. We got to see them when the mom left the nest for a short walk.
We couldn't get enough of the birds!
Especially when we discovered the babies! Look how cute! We've been waiting for this day!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

What a day we had! We wore green, set traps, almost caught a leprechaun, and ate mini leprechaun food!

We made crazy leprechauns to hang in our classroom. We love how they look!

Here are some of our homemade leprechaun traps. How creative!
Chocolate and gold for enticement...

rainbows and gold...

More traps...

We set them all around our carpet, hoping for a catch!
We even left leprechaun food for him... a chocolate chip cookie, marshmallow, and a Hershey's kiss.
When we came back from lunch, our room was a mess! He turned over every trap, took the treats, and sprinkled glitter!
Then we saw he shrunk the food and multiplied it!!! Wow! Some treats for everyone!
Where'd he go???

Books, Books, Books!

We have really been into making books lately! I just love how creative they are! Some write about their favorite things, others write fiction stories, some draw pictures and write a word to go with it. I love all the different styles and they love to share them. We're going to have to start setting aside 10 minutes a day for them to share their books!

Our main inspiration: Tristan the illustrator, Dylan the author, and Dylon the assistant. These boys chose making a book about space over playing on the computer or other centers in the classroom. They actually gave up their recess to help me find a book about space in the library. They researched the color, position, and names of the planets! Amazing!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

We have had a great time this week celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday on March 2nd. Our homework Monday night was to make "Cat in the Hat" hats-- look how creative! Check out our other fun activities...
Getting a little crazy! It was the only way we could take a good picture- if I promised they could also take a crazy one!

A few second graders came to read Dr. Seuss books with us. It was a lot of fun and a lot of crazy words!

After reading Green Eggs and Ham, we made them! We had a great time turning the eggs green and watching them become scrambled on the skillet. And most of us enjoyed eating them as well! :)

Mrs. Paula came to help us out!
