Johnny Appleseed Day

We recently learned all about Johnny Appleseed, and of course, apples! We brought in our favorite kind of apples. We graphed them by color, tasted them to see which was our favorite, and used them as sponges to paint with!

Washing the apples before we tasted them.

They LOVED the Apple-Peeler-Corer-Slicer. I'm pretty sure the apples tasted better to them this way :)

Tasting apples... Granny Smith, Red Delicious, and Gala... we liked some.. and others we did not! :)

We also used apples to paint! What a fun thing to do. And they came out very well!

We've been graphing everything! ... and our apple choices were no exception.

Making Silly Putty

Last Monday, we had a special guest from LSU. Ms. Sheela did some pretty cool chemistry with us! First, we watched as she took two liquid chemicals, mixed them together, and made a foam!... which then turned into a very hard solid! WOW!
And then... she made our week! We got to make our very own Silly Putty!!!

See how small it started out? ... Keep watching!

VERY COOL!
Putting glue into a water-borax mix.
Mixing it up... some of us loved this... some of us weren't so sure :)

WOW! SILLY PUTTY!
WHAT FUN!
And a little strange feeling/looking :)

Thank you Ms. Sheela! We had a great time!

Jersey Day!

Thanks to all our students who had great behavior in the month of September! They were rewarded by being allowed to wear their favorite team's jersey to school. Keep up the good work- October's behavior incentive is wearing a Crazy Hat! I can't wait!

Panda Bears

After learning about panda bears... we used our taste buds to help us remember what they look like. That's our favorite way to learn, by the way- with our mouths! :)
First, we cut out a piece of bread with a bear cookie cutter and buttered it. While looking at a picture of a panda bear, we used marshmallows to cover the white fur and chocolate chips to cover the black fur. Then we put them in the toaster oven to make them toasty and yummy! :)

Polar Bears

What a fun time we had learning about polar bears! We learned that they have black skin under their white fluffy fur. But WHY? We found out for ourselves after wearing black trash bags. We started getting HOT! So... we figured the black skin helps to warm up the polar bears to keep them from freezing in the snow. Aren't we smart to have figured that out all by ourselves :)

Katie demonstrated what a polar bear would look like when they realized my jacket looked like a polar bear! So, we put the white fluffy jacket over the black skin- that way they could visualize why we can't see the black skin, but it's there anyway!

And then... we played with ice! We needed to feel what it was like to be a polar bear, so we used our senses to explore the ice.

Brown Bear Food- Yum, Yum!

After learning about Brown Bears, we made a bear snack :) We love learning through food! Bears eat sticks (pretzels), dried fruit (raisins), and fish (gold fish). We used measuring tools and made a tasty treat. Yum! We kinda like eating like bears!
